Becoming an LPN in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City currently has three schools offering opportunities to train in practical nursing.

Practical nursing is a great career choice, as longevity and health needs mean there is a greater demand for healthcare than ever before.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported in May 2021 that 4,340 practical nurses operated in Oklahoma City - around 24% of all nurses in the city.

Program lengths vary, but you can normally complete a full-time program in around a year, while a part-time programs may take two years or more.

The Oklahoma Board of Nursing vets training programs and is the licensing body for LPNs and other nurses in the state.

Francis Tuttle Technology Center

The school’s state-of-the-art facilities engage students and help them excel in the vital field of practical nursing. With a strong focus on interactive skills, clinical experience blends with classroom study to deliver training that is both relevant and scalable. Courses include nursing fundamentals, workplace safety, and much more.

Admission Requirements:

  • Proof of high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Meet Accuplacer or ACT scores for math, writing, and reading
  • Must pass physical fitness exam, and be  able to carry 35% of body weight
  • Pass background checks
  • Mandatory drug tests
  • Pass human anatomy & physiology and medical terminology, all within five years of application with a minimum grade of C

Moore Norman Technology Center – South Penn

With 1,463 hours of theory, working experiences, and lab work, LPN students at MNTC are prepared for the healthcare workplace. Students will learn all the usual study subjects while also preparing for work with a course called “transition to practice.” At MNTC, students with the right aptitude may apply their practical nursing certificate to an associate’s degree.

Admission Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Proof of immunizations and health screening for Influenza, Hep B, Varicella, 2 MMR. Also proof of negative TB skin test
  • All prerequisite courses (including medical terminology) must be complete with a minimum C grade
  • Submit Compass or ACT scores
  • High school transcripts or GED scores
  • Background check – will look for violent, sexual, and other criminal offenses with OSBI
  • CPR issued by American Heart Association Health Care

Central Oklahoma College

Students, if they wish, may apply the LPN certificate earned through Central Oklahoma to an associate’s degree. They will still be eligible for the NCLEX at the end of the certificate regardless. Enrolled students learn traditional classroom theory, which will also include seminar discussions and presentations. With labs and clinical experiences, students get the best modern nursing training the college has to offer.

Admission Requirements:

  • 18 years or older
  • High School, GED, or equivalent (submit transcripts)
  • Mandatory campus tour and entrance interview
  • Pass an admissions exam
  • Provide proof of all necessary immunizations for professional healthcare
  • Submit to a criminal background check
  • Submit to drug screening
  • CPR certification
  • Active Military and Veterans may be entitled to Veteran’s Administration benefits
