Virginia LPN Licensing Requirements
A minimum for 400 hours of supervised direct patient care in addition to attending a state-approved nursing program is required to become an LPN in Virginia.
Working as an LPN may require physical strength and endurance to carry out the daily activities.
Virginia is 1 of 24 states that make up the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC - https://www.ncsbn.org/nlc.htm). If an LPN holds a license in a NLC state, he or she does not need an additional license to work in other NLC states. However, if LPN's for states outside of the compact area are seeking licensure in the state of Virginia, they can apply for a license by endorsement. Requirements for these applicants include having a current license in another state and completed that state’s approved education program. They must also have taken and passed the NCLEX exam in another state or be scheduled to sit for the exam in another state.
License Verification Form (http://www.dhp.virginia.gov/Forms/nursing/Verification_RN_LPN.pdf)
If the applicant is not a recent graduate of a practical nursing program with at least 400 hours of supervised direct patient care in the state of Virginia or outside of the state of Virginia, or if the applicant was educated in a foreign country, the applicant must contact the Board of Nursing (804-367-4555).
Applications for licensure by exam or endorsement are accepted exclusively online (https://www.license.dhp.virginia.gov/apply/)
Virginia LPN licenses expire every 2 years.
