Sumner College was originally founded as an academic institution in 1974 with educational programs including health care, criminal justice, and court reporting. Today, the post-secondary school primarily offers students programs in Practical Nursing as well as Associate Degrees in Nursing. Sumner College is a for-profit institution and operates two campuses in the Portland Metro Area.

The LPN program is 50 weeks long and is arranged to train nurses to work in a variety of healthcare settings for a wide variety of patients under the supervision and guidance of doctors and registered nurses.
