California LVN License Renewal: BreEZe Step-by-Step Guide

How to Renew Your California LVN License in BreEZe

Steps, CE rules, fees, late renewal, and what to do if the option is missing

Waiting for a mailed renewal notice and checking BreEZe yourself can look like the same plan, but only the second gives you control of the deadline. California LVN licensure renews every two years, and the portal does not always show a renewal option when you expect it.

One nurse in r/LPN_LVN_Community described exactly that: a fee already paid, "Manage License Information" open, and no renewal button. It is a single anecdote, not Board policy, but it is a problem worth planning around.

Employers and California LVN to RN bridge-program clinical sites generally require an active license, so a lapse can pull you off the schedule or out of a placement.

California LVN Renewal at a Glance: Cycle, Deadlines, and Notices

How often do you have to renew a California LVN license, and where do you find your expiration date? California LVN licenses renew every two years. The Board's 2026 fee schedule ties each renewal to your current expiration. A license expiring January 31, 2026, for example, renews through January 31, 2028. To confirm your own date, log in to your DCA BreEZe account or search your name in the Board's public license verification tool, which is available 24 hours a day.

The Notice Is a Courtesy, Not Your Deadline

The Board mails renewal notices about six weeks before expiration. You may see claims online that notices arrive about three months ahead. The Board's official 2026 materials do not support a three-month practice, so plan around six weeks at most. Better yet, plan around zero. Mail gets lost, addresses go stale, and the responsibility for renewing on time sits with you whether a notice shows up or not. Put your expiration date on your calendar now and set a reminder at least two months out.

Online vs. Mail, and How Long It Takes

You can renew two ways:

  • Online through BreEZe: Renewals are processed in real time once payment goes through.
  • By mail with the Board's renewal form: The Board targets 6 to 8 weeks for processing. Its FAQ says to allow about 8 weeks and to call (916) 263-7800 if more time has passed. Individual circumstances can stretch that timeline.

The public lookup is a separate question. The Board does not publish how quickly the verification record updates after you renew, and your old expiration date may stay visible while a mailed renewal is still processing. If an employer or LVN to RN program needs proof, renewing online is the faster path.

Can You Work While Renewal Is Pending?

Only if the Board receives your renewal fee on or before your expiration date. California requires a current active license to practice, and you cannot work once your license has expired. The Board's materials describe no separate grace period.

If this is your first renewal after initial licensure, the LVN continuing education requirement generally does not apply yet. The CE section explains the details and how to confirm your status.

Before You Log in: What You Need to Renew

Gather these before you open BreEZe so your renewal doesn't stall halfway through.

  • BreEZe account
Have your username and password ready. If you've never registered, create an account and link your license first.
  • License number
Use your California LVN license number exactly as the board issued it.
  • CE completion attestation
Active renewal requires 30 approved CE hours. Inactive renewal requires none, but it doesn't authorize LVN work.
  • Fingerprints: who needs them
You need them if you were first licensed before January 1, 1998, or if the board has no electronic fingerprint record for you.
  • Fingerprints: unverified cutoff
Some secondary guides cite a January 1, 2014 cutoff. Official BVNPT renewal instructions don't support it, so confirm with the board.
  • Fingerprints: California residents
Use Live Scan with the BVNPT request form. Expect a $49 processing fee plus the Live Scan site's separate rolling fee.
  • Fingerprints: out-of-state residents
Live Scan is California-only. Call BVNPT at (916) 263-7800 for hard-card instructions.
  • Fingerprints: waivers
Fingerprints are waived for inactive-status renewal and for licensees serving in the military outside the country.
  • Conviction disclosure
You'll certify, under penalty of perjury, any convictions or government discipline since your last renewal.
  • What counts
Include no-contest and dismissed convictions. The only stated exception is a traffic infraction with a fine under $1,000 that involved no alcohol or drugs.
  • Answer truthfully
The Department of Justice automatically notifies the board of new convictions.
  • Payment method
Have payment ready for the renewal fee, which inactive renewals also owe.

Step-by-Step: Renewing Your LVN License in Breeze

California LVNs renew every two years through BreEZe at www.breeze.ca.gov, the Department of Consumer Affairs portal that the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) uses for online renewals. DCA recommends a desktop or laptop for account setup, license linking, and renewal, so skip the phone for this one.2

Set Up and Link Your Account

1. Go to www.breeze.ca.gov and log in. If you have never used BreEZe, register for a new account first. Your user ID needs at least 8 characters, and your date of birth must be entered as MM/DD/YYYY.1 2. Associate your existing license with the account. Select the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians and the vocational nurse license type, then enter the details exactly as the Board has them on file. Linking is required; without it, no renewal option will appear.1

Find and Complete the Renewal

3. Look in Quick Start after logging in. Once your license is associated and you are eligible, the renewal activity appears there. BVNPT describes the entry point as an "It's Time to Renew!" message. 4. Open the renewal and work through the screens. DCA describes the process as application navigation, basic and detailed information, electronic document upload where requested, then payment.1 5. Answer the attestations and disclosures. You will need your Social Security number, you must certify that you completed the required nursing CEUs for license renewal, and you must state under penalty of perjury whether you have been convicted of a crime since your last renewal. Answer carefully and truthfully. 6. Pay the fee and wait for the confirmation screen before you close the browser.

When the Option Appears

DCA's help material says renewal becomes available at least 90 days before expiration, provided the license is associated.1 BVNPT's continuing education page refers to a mailed renewal reminder that goes out six to eight weeks before the deadline, not to the BreEZe renewal option. The sources do not explain the gap, so check your account at the 90-day mark and treat six to eight weeks as the latest point to worry.

Common Stumbling Blocks

  • Duplicate account: Creating a second account is a common reason a license will not show. Use the password reset on your original login before registering again.
  • Name mismatch: A married name, hyphen, or suffix that differs from the Board's record can block association. Enter your name as the Board has it.
  • License will not associate: Recheck the license number and personal details, then contact BreEZe support through your account.

After You Pay

Download and save the PDF receipt, and screenshot the confirmation page. Watch for a confirmation email, which DCA says is customized with Board information.1 Within a few days, run a license lookup and confirm the new expiration date is showing.

Can't Find the Renewal Option in Breeze? What to Try

It happens more often than you'd expect: you log in, open "Manage License Information," and the renewal button simply isn't there. One California LVN described exactly this in the r/LPN_LVN_Community forum, unsure whether to wait for a mailed letter or push forward online. It's an anecdotal case, but a familiar one, and there's a logical order to work through before you panic.

Work Through These Checks First

The BVNPT doesn't publish a special fix for a "missing" renewal button, because online renewal through DCA BreEZe is available 24 hours a day when your license is actually eligible. Start by ruling out the ordinary explanations.

  • Confirm your expiration date and window: Renewal typically becomes available only as you enter your renewal window. If your date is still months out, the option may not have opened yet.
  • Verify the license is linked to your account: A BreEZe account can exist without your LVN license attached to it. If the license isn't associated, no renewal path will appear.
  • Check for name or address mismatches: Records that don't match can interfere with how your license displays.

Who to Call, and About What

Match the problem to the right line. Account linking, password, registration, or error-message issues go to BreEZe Technical Support at (916) 557-1208. Questions about renewal status or eligibility go to the Licensing Division at (916) 263-7800; the Board specifically says to call that number if you submitted a renewal more than eight weeks ago and still see nothing.

When you reach out, have your full name, last four SSN digits, date of birth, and license number ready. Never put a full Social Security number in an email or attachment.

Some nurses report in-portal messages answered within 24 to 48 hours. Treat that as anecdotal, not a promise, and keep documenting as you go: screenshots of what you see, the dates and times of each login attempt, and your fee receipt.

Fix Name and Address Records

Outdated records can quietly block notices. Under Business and Professions Code Section 136(a), you must report an address change in writing within 30 days. The Board does not accept address or legal-name changes by phone or email; it needs a signed, dated document. Include your full name, license number, old and new addresses, a daytime phone, signature, and date. You can submit through BreEZe or fax to (916) 263-7855.

CE Requirements: Hours, Approved Providers, and Audit-Proof Records

California requires 30 contact hours of continuing education for every active LVN renewal, with one exception worth knowing. The hours must be completed in the 24 months before your renewal date and must relate to your scope of practice. Your first renewal after initial licensure is exempt. That exemption disappears if your license has been delinquent for more than one full renewal cycle (over 24 months), in which case CE is required. Inactive renewal does not require the 30 hours, though other requirements apply.

What Counts Toward Your 30 Hours

The safest route is a provider approved by the BVNPT. Courses approved by another state's nursing board, or comparable courses, can also qualify if they meet California requirements and relate to your scope. Theory and clinical hours count one-for-one.

Academic coursework can count too, particularly classes that are prerequisites for or part of an RN program. The BVNPT lists examples such as anatomy and physiology, chemistry, ethics, pharmacology, and psychology. That is useful if you are already in an LPN-to-RN bridge track at one of the LVN programs in California.

Before you pay, check the provider against the BVNPT's continuing education provider information and ask for the approval number in writing. Do not assume that every home-study, CME, or college course qualifies on its own. The sources do not establish that. If you have a 2026 training requirement you are unsure about, confirm it with the board directly.

Attestation and Record Retention

At renewal you certify, under penalty of perjury, that you completed the 30 hours. You do not upload or mail certificates with the application. Keep the originals for four years, which covers your current and previous renewal periods. Some third-party summaries state different retention periods, so go with the board's figure.

An Audit-Proof Habit

The BVNPT audits at random. A 2024 legislative background paper reported about 2.5% of renewals per cycle, roughly 116 LVN letters a month.1 Current pages do not confirm those figures still hold. A false attestation can also trigger an individual audit.2 If you are chosen, you send copies of your certificates, so build the file as you go:

  • One folder: Save every certificate in a single paper or digital folder the day you finish a course.
  • Cloud backup: Keep a second copy somewhere that survives a lost phone or a move.
  • Approval number: Write the provider's approval number and the course dates on each record.

When you are ready to pick courses, a board-approved CE provider with a searchable catalog can save time. Verify its approval first, whichever one you choose.

California LVN Renewal Fees and Status Comparison

Your renewal cost depends on your license status and how long it has gone unrenewed. The figures below come from the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians fee schedule and its expiration-date fee charts, current as of October 2026. Confirm the amount BreEZe shows you before you pay, since late fees and multi-cycle balances are calculated from your specific expiration date.

License Status or Fee TypeFeeWhen It AppliesKey Notes
Active LVN renewal (biennial)$305.00Every 2 years. The fee must be received on or before your expiration date for you to keep working legally.Requires payment of the renewal fee and completion of continuing education requirements.
Inactive LVN renewal$305.00You select inactive status at renewal. An inactive license still has to be renewed every 2 years. The 30 hours of continuing education are not required while inactive, but you may not work as an LVN on an inactive license.
Delinquent renewal fee$150.00Assessed when the renewal fee is not paid within 30 days after your expiration date.A delinquent license can be renewed within 4 years of expiration by paying all accrued renewal fees plus delinquent fees and submitting proof of CE, a Social Security number, and a conviction statement.
Renewal covering two cycles$755 (two renewal cycles plus the $150 delinquent fee)Renewals received or postmarked between November 1, 2026, and October 31, 2028, under the Board's 2025 expiration-date fee chart.Covers back renewal fees for both missed cycles. CE proof and the other delinquent renewal documents still apply.
Renewal covering three cycles$1,055 (three renewal cycles plus the $150 delinquent fee)Renewals received or postmarked between November 1, 2026, and January 31, 2027, under the Board's 2023 expiration-date fee chart. The cost of waiting climbs with each missed cycle, so this is the last window before the 4-year limit becomes a concern.
License not renewed for more than 4 consecutive yearsN/A (no separate reinstatement fee identified on the current fee schedule)Applies once a license has gone unrenewed for more than 4 consecutive years. The license expires and cannot be renewed, restored, reinstated, or reissued. You must retake and pass the licensing examination.
I paid the renewal fee after my first two years, but when I log into BreEZe and go to Manage License Information, there's no option to renew.

What Happens the Longer Your License Stays Expired

An LVN license doesn't go from current to gone overnight. Each stage past your expiration date adds cost, paperwork, and time away from work. The ladder below shows where you stand and what you have to do to climb back.
