LVN Programs in Concord, California 2027

Compare tuition, schedules, accreditation and outcomes at vocational nursing schools near Concord

California LVNs earn a median of $79,750 a year, and the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont metro pays well above that, which is why Concord applicants tend to weigh a $30,000 private program differently than students elsewhere in the country.

Concord sits in central Contra Costa County, with a handful of private vocational nursing schools in town and LVN programs Bay Area community college options within a 40-mile drive. County of Contra Costa Health Services in nearby Martinez hires LVNs across detention, med-surg, psychiatric, and outpatient settings.

The tension is cost versus seat availability: public programs, the Most Affordable LPN/LVN Programs for 2026, run a fraction of private tuition but carry waitlists and lottery admissions, while private schools start cohorts several times a year. No fully online LVN program can license you in California.

Where Concord LVNs Actually Train and Work in Contra Costa County

County of Contra Costa Health Services in Martinez, home to Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, lists LVN openings in detention, emergency department, medical-surgical, outpatient, operating room, postpartum, and psychiatric settings, with assignments split between Concord/Martinez and East County cities from Pittsburg to Byron.1 That single county posting captures the spread of LVN work here: broader than a hospital floor and heavily regional.

Where the jobs actually cluster

John Muir Health in Walnut Creek appears among LVN jobs in Walnut Creek listings in care coordination and urology services. Kaiser Permanente posts vaccination clinic LVN positions for Walnut Creek, Martinez, and Antioch, with the primary site at Antioch Delta Fair Medical Offices. Around them, the volume sits in skilled nursing and post-acute settings such as Diablo Valley Post Acute in Concord and Tampico Healthcare Center in Walnut Creek, plus home health agencies, dialysis clinics, pediatric offices, and outpatient providers like Sutter Health in Concord and First Place Pediatrics in Antioch. Center for Elders' Independence in Concord also hires LVNs for community-based elder care.2

California LVN hiring skews toward skilled nursing, clinics, correctional health, and home health because many acute-care inpatient units reserve direct bedside roles for RNs. For a Concord job search, that means prioritizing SNFs, county clinics, home health agencies, ambulatory surgery, and detention or vaccine sites over hospital med-surg floors. County correctional and detention roles are a major exception, with Contra Costa Health Services listing detention as one of its LVN settings.1

Commute patterns to keep in the search

Use a job search radius that spans LVN programs Bay Area cities, including Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Martinez, Antioch, and Oakland. County postings can be regional rather than tied to a single facility, so a Martinez application may place you in Concord or East County. Kaiser's vaccination clinic posting also covers three cities from one primary location.

Ask about clinical sites before you enroll

Clinical rotation placement quality varies by school and is not always published. Diablo Valley Post Acute in Concord advertises rotation slots for its CNA students3, but LVN program clinical site lists usually require a direct conversation with the program. On a campus visit, ask where students complete medical-surgical, geriatric, pediatric, and outpatient hours, whether sites sit inside Contra Costa County, and what the school does when a facility cancels.

Can You Do an LVN Program Online in Concord? And Are Any Free?

The Short Answer

No fully online LVN program can license you in California.1 The Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians requires supervised in-person clinical hours2 and has not approved distance-learning LVN programs.1 When a school uses the word "hybrid," it means online theory plus required campus skills labs and clinical placements. Always verify the specific campus and delivery format with the Board before enrolling in accredited LVN programs in California.

What Hybrid Actually Looks Like Near Concord

Hybrid formats usually move lectures online as recorded lessons or live sessions, but skills check-offs and clinical rotations stay in person. Depending on the term, that can mean two or three campus days per week, with more days during clinicals. Unitek College has a Concord campus with a BVNPT-approved Vocational Nursing program delivered in a hybrid format, so online theory is paired with required in-person labs and clinicals. Nearby LVN programs in Oakland include Project Heartbeat, which starts September 14, 2026 and runs 47 weeks for 1,530 total hours: 576 theory and 954 clinical.3 Those 954 clinical hours cannot be completed online, so plan for several on-site days each week even if some coursework is remote.

Is Any LVN Training Free in Concord?

No guaranteed free LVN program has been identified in Concord. The most realistic cost-reduction route is WIOA funding through the Contra Costa County Workforce Development Board. Eligible adults 18 and older may receive up to $5,000 for job training at eligible providers after orientation, document submission, and need demonstration; priority goes to public assistance and low-income residents.4 This is general training support, not an LVN-specific award, so confirm coverage before you rely on it. Ask which LVN programs are currently on the eligible training provider list. No standing county LVN grant was found. A live East Bay employer-sponsored LVN or earn-while-you-learn pathway was not identified for 2026. Working as a CNA can help you afford school, but it is not the same as employer sponsorship.

Where to Start

  • Local America's Job Center of California office: ask about WIOA and eligible training providers.
  • County adult school: ask about allied health prerequisites or low-cost CNA training. No Contra Costa adult school LVN program was identified for 2026, but the adult school may still help with foundational courses.
  • School financial aid office: ask about payment plans, scholarships, and clinical partner tuition help.

What LVN School Costs Near Concord: Tuition, Fees, Books, and Testing

Sticker price varies more than most applicants expect, and the number on a school's website is rarely the number you pay. Private vocational nursing programs near Concord cluster in the high $20,000s to high $30,000s for the full program, while community college coursework in the Contra Costa district runs on a per-unit fee structure with a far lower published cost of attendance budget. Read the "what's included" column carefully: uniforms, lab kits, malpractice insurance, CPR certification, background checks, and NCLEX-PN testing prep are sometimes bundled and sometimes billed separately.

Admission Requirements at Concord-Area Vocational Nursing Programs

Vocational nursing admissions in the Concord area follow a predictable pattern, but the details differ enough between schools that you should verify each one directly before paying an application fee. Expect a baseline academic credential, an entrance exam, health and clearance paperwork, and, at some schools, a ranked selection process rather than simple first-come enrollment.

  • Academic baseline and minimum age
A high school diploma or GED is the standard entry credential at Gurnick Academy's Concord campus and at Contra Costa Medical Career College in Antioch. Contra Costa Medical Career College sets a minimum age of 18 at enrollment. At Unitek College's Concord campus, the published minimum age is 17, with a parent or guardian co-signature required for applicants who are still 17 when they enroll. Mt. Diablo Adult Education also uses an 18-year minimum for its programs, but it does not currently offer a vocational nursing program.
  • Entrance exams vary by school, and so do the passing marks
Gurnick's Concord vocational nursing applicants take the CCAT with a minimum score of 16; higher scores earn more points in the ranking process, so treating 16 as "good enough" is a mistake. Contra Costa Medical Career College uses the Wonderlic SLE with a minimum of 19 and, as of 2026, the ATI TEAS with a 60% minimum, though the school's own published materials and third-party listings have quoted different exam requirements and cut scores in recent years, so confirm the current test in writing. Unitek uses the SLE-Q as part of its application and ranking, along with a TEAS benchmark reported at 58.7%. Contra Costa College requires a drug dosage calculation exam.
  • Prerequisite coursework, credentials, and GPA
Gurnick requires its Essential Medical Bioscience prerequisite with a grade of C or better and lists a 2.5 GPA requirement. Contra Costa Medical Career College requires a prior healthcare credential or experience, California CNA certification, a medical assistant certificate, pharmacy technician completion, or documented direct care experience, which conflicts with marketing language elsewhere advertising "no prerequisites." Contra Costa College lists a 3.0 GPA minimum. Unitek does not publish a numeric GPA minimum for vocational nursing; its prerequisite coursework must be completed within 12 months before the program start.
  • Clearances, health records, and certifications
Background checks are required at Gurnick, Contra Costa Medical Career College, and Contra Costa College. At Unitek, the background check process begins during prerequisite coursework, with background and drug screening completed before clinical placement. Contra Costa Medical Career College publishes the most complete immunization list in the area: MMR, Tdap, polio, hepatitis B, varicella, TB testing, seasonal influenza, and COVID-19. Plan on Live Scan fingerprinting and current CPR/BLS certification as well, clinical sites, not just schools, drive these requirements, and an expired card can delay your clinical start.
  • Selection method: ranked competition vs. rolling enrollment
Gurnick uses point-based ranking at the campus level, and Unitek's use of the SLE-Q in application scoring points toward a ranked selection process rather than open enrollment, though neither school publishes a formal waitlist policy. Contra Costa College uses merit-based selection for its Fall 2027 cycle. Contra Costa Medical Career College advertises no waitlist but enrolls a small cohort of roughly 20 students per year, which functionally limits seats regardless of the marketing language.
  • Deadlines and cohort starts
Contra Costa College's application window runs October 1 through February 1. Private programs generally start cohorts more frequently than community colleges, but current 2026 Concord-specific start dates are not published for Unitek or Gurnick, a Gurnick January 2027 start has been announced for the Van Nuys campus only, pending state board approval, and Unitek's published cohort dates do not specify campus. Call each admissions office for the next confirmed Concord cohort date and the document deadline that precedes it, which typically falls weeks before the first day of class.

Accreditation, BVNPT Approval, and NCLEX-PN Pass Rates

There are two separate stamps of approval on any Concord-area vocational nursing program, and they do different jobs. The California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) approves the program itself: without that approval, you cannot sit for the NCLEX-PN in California, as explained in California LVN Licensure and Challenging the Boards, no matter how good the school looks.3 Institutional accreditation from a body such as ACCSC, ABHES, or WSCUC is a separate credential that governs the school as a business and an educational institution, and it is what typically determines eligibility for federal financial aid and whether your credits will transfer into an associate or bachelor's program later.

Why You Need Both

A program can hold BVNPT approval and still leave you stuck if the school lacks recognized institutional accreditation. You would be licensed, but your coursework might not count toward an ADN, BSN, or a California LVN to RN down the road, and you may not qualify for federal grants or loans. Conversely, an accredited school running an unapproved nursing program is a dead end for licensure. Ask about both, in writing, before you sign anything.

Verify Before You Pay a Deposit

The BVNPT maintains a listing of approved vocational nursing programs, and approval status can also be checked through the Department of Consumer Affairs License Search.1 Look up the exact campus, not just the school name: a chain can have one approved location and another that is not. Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts in Concord, for example, is listed as a BVNPT-approved vocational nursing program at its Concord campus.4 Confirm the record yourself rather than relying on a brochure.

Reading Pass Rates and Approval Type

The board publishes NCLEX-PN first-time pass rates for approved California vocational nursing programs covering a rolling five-year window, most recently refreshed in February 2026.2 We are not going to quote a specific figure for individual Concord-area programs here, because the current published table needs to be read directly to get an accurate, up-to-date number for any single campus and year.

When you pull it, note two things. First, approval comes in full and provisional forms; provisional status generally signals a program the board is watching, often after enrollment changes or performance concerns.3 Second, compare each program's first-time rate to the statewide figure in the same table.2 A campus running consistently below the state average, or one carrying provisional approval, is not automatically disqualifying, but it deserves pointed questions about instructor turnover, clinical placements, and NCLEX review support.

Day, Evening, and Hybrid Schedules: How Long LVN Programs Take

Full-time day cohorts get you to the NCLEX-PN fastest, but they demand a life that revolves around class for a year straight. Hybrid LPN Programs and part-time evening tracks buy flexibility and stretch the same coursework toward two years, which matters if you're keeping a job or raising kids while you train.

At Unitek College Concord, the 1,620-hour vocational nursing diploma runs 12 months full-time day, 17 months full-time evening, or 20 months part-time evening. That range gives working adults real options, though the longer tracks still carry full-time-equivalent coursework spread over more calendar time, not lighter workloads.

Gurnick Academy offers full-time day and full-time evening tracks at 12 months (48 weeks) each, plus a part-time evening option at 18 months (72 weeks). Its 954 clinical hours land on whatever days facilities schedule them, often not the evenings or weekends students hope to reserve. Contra Costa Medical Career College's program runs roughly 14 to 15 months full-time or 19 to 21 months part-time, built around 1,530 clock hours.

The Clinical Hours Catch

Whichever school you choose, clinical rotations rarely respect a tidy evening-only schedule. Hospitals and skilled nursing facilities staff around patient needs, not student convenience, so day shifts, early mornings, or occasional weekends often creep into programs marketed as "evening." Ask each admissions office directly how clinical days are assigned before you commit to a work schedule around it.

Day-Only vs Evening Access

Unitek and Gurnick both offer evening or part-time evening cohorts, which matters most for anyone who can't drop a job for a year. Contra Costa Medical Career College's published schedule centers on daytime classes, so evening-only students should confirm current offerings directly before applying.

Start Dates Differ Too

Private schools like Unitek and Gurnick tend to run rolling or frequent cohort starts throughout the year, which shortens the wait to enroll. Public and adult-school programs, where available, typically start once or twice a year, so missing an enrollment window can cost you months.

What LVNs Earn in the Concord and San Francisco Metro Area

Concord sits inside the Bay Area wage market, and that matters more to your paycheck than almost any other factor in this article. California LVNs post a median annual wage of $79,750, while the San Francisco, Oakland, Fremont metro division (which covers Contra Costa County employers) reports a $94,310 median, roughly $30,000 above the national figure. The figures below come from the most recent federal wage survey (May 2025 estimates published in 2026), with older metro-division releases shown for context where newer percentile detail has not been published.

Lvn-To-RN and Lvn-To-BSN Bridge Options Near Concord

A LPN to RN bridge program is a shortened RN pathway that gives you academic credit for the practical nursing education and license you already hold, so you don't repeat the first year of nursing school. In California, three distinct routes exist, and they lead to genuinely different places. Getting the licensure sorted out before you apply saves you from a costly detour.

The 30-unit option: fastest, but narrowest

California's Board of Registered Nursing allows LVNs to sit for the NCLEX-RN after completing a maximum of 30 semester units under Rule 1429, without earning a degree. Los Medanos College in Pittsburg runs an LVN to RN Transition built on this model: a valid California LVN license, prerequisite coursework including BIOSC 45 and BIOSC 50, and a minimum 2.0 GPA. Students enter the existing RN program's later semesters, so the nursing portion typically runs two semesters once admitted. The next intake is Fall 2027, with applications in January 2027. Contra Costa College in San Pablo offers a comparable 30 Unit Option, with fall applications accepted February 1 through April 1 and spring applications July 1 through October 1.

The trade-off is real. You finish with a "non-graduate" RN designation rather than an associate degree, and practice is limited largely to California. Other states generally will not endorse this license, and neither will most BSN programs looking for a completed degree. If you may ever leave the state, choose a different route.

Degree-bearing routes

LVN-to-ADN advanced placement, often called LPN to ADN programs, keeps you in the same community college system but awards the associate degree, typically around two years including general education. Diablo Valley College sits inside the same district as Los Medanos and Contra Costa, and the district uses a shared application process, so Concord residents often apply across campuses at once.

LVN-to-BSN paths at private East Bay universities run longer and cost considerably more, but they are portable across state lines and lead to graduate study. Verify current offerings directly, since several local universities market RN-to-BSN completion rather than a true LVN entry point.

Expect anatomy, physiology, and usually microbiology before any application. Some programs add conditions, such as IV certification posted to your license, so read each school's requirements individually before choosing the right LPN/LVN bridge program.
